The Youth Parliament program is divided into three phases:
- Before the Camp
- During the Camp
- After the Camp
Before the Camp the selected Youth Parliamentarians are brought together in a digital space, divided into parties (government and opposition) and specific bill committees. They collaborate writing bills in their committees, deciding their leadership, and learning about the issues.
During the Camp YMPs stay for six days in hostel in central Canberra, spending most of their time in the House of Representatives in Old Parliament House, debating the issues and legislation they prepared in the lead up to the camp.
After the Camp the participants are brought together with their MPs and others within the political system who are willing to act as mentors. There are also events held throughout the year to keep the bonds forged during the camp strong, and to enable Youth MPs to network with those who may be useful in their future lives.
